Mrs. Kicou's computer is all in French.

This is very unsettling.

Down to the AZERTY keyboard?

But why would it be unsettling if that's the language you use at home?

I may spend most of my online life in English (and come to think of it, most of my entertainment as well), but to me, using computer tools in my native language is not only natural, it's a non-negotiable requirement.

@normand good lord, no azerty keyboard, that thing is an abomination and can't even do accented capitals (plus you have to press shift to use the numbers row). As a good (former) UNIX sysadmin she uses a good old qwerty layout, albeit the international variant.

The fact that every single menu item is in French throws me off, not because I don't understand it but because I have to constantly scan the whole content and translate back to English when looking for specific keywords. The most jarring thing is the command output and error messages. The whole thing slows me down considerably.

Also, it makes everything look like it is in verbose mode: French is not a very concise language. Sometimes there isn't enough space to display a message in its entirety and you have to guess what should be after the ellipsis.

LOL, we agree on that. I'll never understand it. So inefficient. No wonder many (nearly wrote most) French people forego using accented letters altogether (a trend that annoys me to no end 😡).

IMNSHO the best keyboard layout to type French is Canadian Multilingual, called by the Québec's OQLF le clavier normalisé ACNOR (CSA). Still allows you to type efficiently in English. It's supported both by Windows and Linux. I believe Apple keyboards match it, at least they used to.

But to my great frustration, all you can get on the Canadian market nowadays, when you're lucky, is the mediocre French Canadian layout. 20 years ago you could find (by searching very hard) keyboards with printed Canadian Multilingual layout.

So I buy French Canadian keyboards, then slap on Canadian Multilingual stickers by Beaujoie. Unfortunately this means no backlit keyboard.
